The term 'vækstlag' ("growth layer") is deeply embedded in Danish music life. It's used by music venues, policymakers, and foundations to describe the particular layer of music where new artists gain a foothold, new expressions emerge, and the future of the music scene takes shape. But what does the term actually mean? There's no single answer. Ask ten venues, and you'll get ten different definitions, and that's exactly what this report sets out to explore.

What Is the 'Vækstlag'? A Study of the Use and Practice of the 'Vækstlag' Concept dives into how 34 venues across Denmark understand and work with the term in practice. It unfolds a 'vækstlag' that isn't simply a phase young musicians pass through on their way to an established career. It's an entire ecosystem, shaped by local variation, diverse initiatives, and actors carrying out vastly different tasks: from the earliest, untested layer of emerging talent to artists on the verge of a breakthrough; from the passionate volunteer at a small local venue to the regional venue with a formal talent-development strategy; and from fee-supported stages focused on helping new names get a foot in the industry, to cultural centers creating space for communities to build their own music scenes.

The report zeroes in on a central insight: the vækstlag works best when it's defined within its context. It also presents a concrete model with four levels, designed to help actors across the music industry articulate what they actually do - and who they're doing it for.

Read on if you're curious about what the vækstlag really is, how it's being worked with across the country and, not least, what it will take to strengthen it going forward.
